About the Role

Eoptic provides appearance metrology instruments that characterize the appearance of complex materials under a range of environmental conditions. We are looking for an experienced Material Perception Scientist to join our Industrial Metrology division and help us continue pushing the frontier in quantifying material perception—for use in both large-scale manufacturing and laboratory characterization of commercial products.
‍

In this role, you will synthesize principles from the most current research in material perception to help our R&D team develop new and novel appearance metrology instruments. You will write test code to run in-house evaluations of new appearance models and algorithms, and design experiments spanning a wide range of materials. This is a hands-on position creating the next generation of metrology tools that help designers and manufacturers communicate more effectively—driving greater product consistency, quality, and efficiency.
‍

What You'll Do

  • Synthesize principles from current material perception research to inform the design of new appearance metrology instruments.
  • Write test code to conduct in-house evaluations of new appearance models and algorithms.
  • Design and set up experiments across a wide range of materials to validate models and instrumentation.
  • Conduct psychophysics experiments to characterize how humans perceive material attributes such as color, gloss, texture, and translucency.
  • Collaborate with the R&D team to translate perceptual insights into hands-on, deployable metrology tools.
    ‍

Required Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in Color Science.
  • 5+ years of experience conducting research on how humans perceive material attributes such as color, gloss, texture, and translucency.
  • Experience conducting psychophysics experiments related to human perception of materials.
  • Software experience programming perceptual modeling algorithms.
  • Hands-on experience with imaging and display hardware.
  • Deep understanding of human vision and color science.
  • Strong proficiency in MATLAB.
    ‍

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in AR/VR or 3D rendering related to material perception.
  • Python experience.
    ‍
